BuildFest started as three people in a college lab in 2023. Here’s what we believe, what we’ve built, and where it’s going next.
Kashmir needed a room to build in.
Before BuildFest, there wasn’t really a place for a student in Srinagar to sit next to someone who’d shipped a real product and just ask questions. We started as three people in a college lab. We’re still, at heart, that same room — it’s just bigger now.
Every college here should have a dev community.
Not a placement cell. Not a coding club that meets once a semester. A real, active group of students shipping things together — and BuildFest exists to seed that in every campus across the valley, not just the ones that already have one.
What we won’t compromise on.
Ship, don't just learn
Tutorials are a starting point, not the goal. Every workshop and hackathon ends with something deployed, not just a slide deck.
No gatekeeping
First-timers get the same mentor access as returning winners. Experience level is never a filter for who gets help.
Open by default
Code, curricula, and even event budgets are public where possible. Other college communities can fork what we've built.
Run by students, for students
No full-time staff. Every organizer is a student balancing this with actual coursework — which keeps the community honest about what students actually need.
